Uyeasound Up Helly Aa
Uyeasound Up Helly Aa is the first Up Helly Aa to occur on Unst each year. Celebrations with the Jarl Squad happen throughout the day, including the annual visit to the Baltasound Junior High School where locals, children and Vikings gather for a few hours. This is often the first sighting of the themewear and galley! The Squad will visit some other sites on the island before gathering at the Uyeasound hall in the afternoon for a social afternoon.
Evening celebrations begin early with the procession where the Jarl Squad and approximately 200 other 'guizers' light their torches and get the singing underway. The procession concludes with the burning of the galley, where traditional Up Helly Aa songs are sung and the galley is set alight.
Celebrations in the Uyeasound Hall go on until late, with the squads performing acts and a dance to a Shetland band. No tickets are required to view the procession, however be sure to get your ticket before heading to the hall.
