Unst plays an important role in Shetland's history, as well as having its own unique blend of pastimes, culture and traditions.
The Unst Heritage Trust comprises the Heritage Centre and Boat Haven. Our two small museums are committed to showcasing to visitors our culture, arts, values, traditions and heritage. Through unique displays and resources, our two small visitor centres display artefacts to make a look at the past seem as visible and real as possible.
Other notable, and popular, spots to see are the famous Muness Castle and Shetland Amenity Trust's Viking Unst project (more information below). There are several Viking sites in Unst, notably at Haroldswick (Viking Longhouse & Galley) but also on the south side of the Keen of Hamar in Baltasound, at Underhoul above Lund beach in the Westing and, just after you come off the ferry, an excavation site at Belmont.
There is also the remains of the Hagdale Horse-mill, used for stone-crushing in Baltasound. Follow the track going down from the "Balta Light". The mill is a circular stone building where a horse walked round, turning a large mill-stone used to crush the ore mined there.
