Safe Travels

Safety before everything. It can be 'oh so tempting' to aim for the most spectacular spot or be the most northerly person in the UK, but make sure the conditions are right. Although beautiful, the weather can often be harsh and unpredictable.

Here's our top tips on staying safe while on your visit to Unst:

  • Plan ahead! Walking up to Hermaness? Always check the weather and make informed decisions. It may even be worth asking one of our experienced locals for some advice if you're unsure.
  • Dress for the weather. If you're visiting us in the Winter months make sure you come prepared with a warm winter jacket. You might even want to take the hats and scarves... We would always recommend visiting the island with a warm jumper and jacket, no matter what time of year you're arriving.
  • Pay attention to our signs! There are lots of signs to help you on your travels, please don't ignore them.
  • Know when to retrace steps. If you find yourself feeling uncomfortable, the land getting worse or the weather closing in we would always recommend heading back the way you came into familiar grounds.
  • Travel in groups. If you can, we would always recommend undertaking your adventures with at least one other person. It's always a good idea to walk with a buddy, just to be safe.
  • Tell someone where you are going - and when you expect to arrive or return.
  • Keep your phone charged. Although the signal on Unst can be a little patchy, it's always a good idea to keep your phone charged.
  • Stick to the trails. Our walking routes and trails won't disappoint, we promise.
  • Be friendly, and respectful. Our island is packed with wildlife and farming land. Be sure to show respect to the animals and also ensure you take any rubbish away with you.
